2024 Contemporary Circus Residency in Finland – Open Call
A research and residency opportunity for German circus makers

To develop contemporary circus within the context of international exchange in cooperation with Goethe-Institut (Theatre/Dance department of the Goethe-Institut headquarters in Munich and Goethe-Institut Finnland), BUZZ (Bundesverband Zeitgenössischer Zirkus e.V.) together with Cirko – Center for New Circus in Helsinki, Circus and Dance Info Finland and Finnland-Institut in Berlin invite applications for a research residency in Finland for a German-based circus maker. This project is a continuation of the residency hosted for a Finnish circus maker in Germany in 2023.

The residency program in Finland takes place from October 3rd to October 23rd, 2024. The selected circus maker will spend 3 weeks in Finland with a base at Cirko in Helsinki. Cirko will provide  the artist with accommodation and a circus training space. In addition, the program will include visits to other Finnish circus organisations and opportunities for networking and creative exchange with local circus makers. This part of the residency will be developed in consultation with the selected artist.

The residency will focus on the creative development of a personal project, artistic research and exploration of the Finnish contemporary circus sector. Applicants should express an active curiosity about the Finnish contemporary circus sector. The selected artist will be expected to document their experiences and deliver a presentation of their experience or a work-in-progress showing at the end of the residency.

The program is designed to strengthen cultural ties between the German and Finnish circus sectors, and to facilitate cultural exchange and collaborations between circus artists and institutions.
